Gooner’s first EVER game of poker.

Dave ‘The Gooner’ was sick of coming down to the club and sipping on a quiet beer while all his mates gradually succumbed to the draw of The Game. He wasn’t into it, and from day one said as much….
Then Sudgie psychologically dismantled him. It was great to watch the master at work – doleful, pleading eyes, sincerity oozing from every pore (and as every poker player knows, sincerity is everything. If you can fake that…..) – “Aw c’mon Dave, its fun and easy to learn. I’ll teach you”.

Now Gooner, applying the Can’t beat ‘em join ‘em school of thought, eventually said ‘Fukit, go on then’. He’d been Sudgied. Unfortunately, Sudgie’s enthusiasm for Texas Hold ‘Em is not matched by his teaching skills. Here’s an example, bearing in mind that he’s speaking to a complete poker virgin, “You’re on small blind with pocket Aces, and chasing trips but you don’t want the table to cotton” or “On occasion, 7-3 suited is still worth a dabble”.
Anyway, long story short, Gooner got into it and quickly picked up on what we’d known all along – its fun. At the end of the evening he left happy with a 2nd place under his belt, confidently claiming he was two or three games away from mastering The Game. We'll see.....
